Seniors, can you believe it’s April? Your high school graduation is a little
over a month away. The time between now
and then will fly by. There’s prom,
senior retreat, and all sorts of celebrations.
There’s also the excitement of deciding on and looking ahead to college. And to that point, let me express how proud our office is of the work you did this year applying to schools. The Class of '16 has wonderful options!
It happens quickly, but you’re coming to an ending. And endings are important. They provide an
opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate relationships that will inevitably
fade as you move beyond HIES. You might
be surprised to find how meaningful a quick ‘thank you’ can be to the important
people who have shaped this chapter of your life.
Thank your teachers for writing letters of
recommendation. If you’ve
decided, consider telling them where you’re headed next year. Just be sure they know you’re grateful for
their support – as a teacher, as a recommendation writer, as a mentor, as a
coach, etc.
I encourage you to take steps like these over the coming
weeks to properly seek some closure before moving on. It’s easy to be swept up in the celebrations
and the excitement of what’s next. Indeed, you have much to be excited about!
But don’t forget to honor where you’ve been. Few gestures are as meaningful as
a sincere expression of gratitude to someone important to you.
